Buzz Lightyear is now part of the Smithsonian

Posted on 06:16 by john mical
To the Smithsonian -- and beyond!

Buzz Lightyear of "Toy Story" fame is now part of the National Air and Space Museum's popular culture collection.

The 12-inch action figure was launched into space on May 31, 2008, aboard the space shuttle Discovery (STS-124) on a trip to the International Space Station and returned 15 months later on Discovery (STS-128), making it the longest serving toy in space.

The Space Ranger was part of a Disney-NASA partnership focused on creating "interactive games, educational worksheets and special messages encouraging students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics," according to a news release from the Smithsonian. (Though, some may surmise Buzz had a top secret mission to fight the Evil Emperor Zurg.)

The figure was also used by the astronauts, according to the release, "occasionally, to have a little fun on the side." Yeah, imagine the astronauts making Buzz fly in zero gravity.

“It is truly one of the biggest thrills of my career to have one of Pixar’s most beloved characters, Buzz Lightyear, travel in space and now travel in time as part of the Smithsonian collection where he will inspire future generations of explorers, engineers and scientists to infinity and beyond,” John Lasseter, chief creative officer at Pixar Animation Studios, said in a release.

The action figure will go on display in the museum’s “Moving Beyond Earth” gallery this summer.

Now we just need a place for Woody.

The National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is located at Sixth Street and Independence Avenue S.W. It is open daily from 10 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Marvel's 'The Avengers' movie to close Tribeca Film Festival

Posted on 04:32 by john mical
The highly anticipated Marvel's Avengers movie will close the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on April 28.

In doing this, the festival will be honoring heroes from police agencies, fire departments, first responders and various branches of the U.S. military. These local heroes will have an opportunity to attend the screening and meet the cast, according to a new release.

The film goes into wide release on May 4 and everyone in Marvel fandom is holding their breath for what we all hope is a spectacular movie bringing together Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Hawkeye, the Black Widow and Nick Fury. The movie is base on Marvel's comic book series "The Avengers" which started out in 1963.

Joss Whedon, of "Buffy" fame and recently the "Star Trek" reboot, directed the film. "Showing at Tribeca is both an honor and a double homecoming for me, who grew up inManhattan, and for the movie, which wrapped production there. I'm thoroughly psyched to be closing the festival with our intimate little think-piece," Whedon said in a release.

The movie starts Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Tom Hiddleston, with Stellan Skarsgard and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

Disney Store giving out special Mickey ears in honor of 25th anniversary

Posted on 06:30 by john mical
To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Disney Store on Thursday, March 28, is planning to give away silver commemorative Mickey Mouse ears to the first 250 shoppers at each of it locations, the company announced.

The stores will also have family activities planned and give 25 percent off purchases at each store and online at DisneyStore.com, the company said in a press release.

“Disney Store’s 25th anniversary is about celebrating our guests, our products, and the memorable experiences we create for families every day,” said Jim Fielding, president of Disney Store worldwide.

Now, we all know the Disney Store has been through its ups and downs. The original stores were built to give everyone a full shopping experience, including art and animation. As the stores progressed and the merchandise, at least in my opinion, faltered, the stores went a bit downhill. As the recession hit, they needed to regroup and closed a lot of the locations. Hopefully, they will again bring back a nice shopping experience.

The revamped attraction will change the characters from the Disney Channel's "Kim Possible" television show, which ran from 2002 to 2007, in which guests used a Kimmunicator to go around the World Showcase to stop super villains from carrying out their dastardly plans, to the "Phineas & Ferb" television show characters.

For those unfamiliar with the Disney Channel hit, the show follows stepbrothers Phineas Flynn and Ferb Fletcher on summer vacation. Everyday the boys embark on a new project with a subplot of Perry the Platypus as secret Agent P fighting his nemesis Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz

According to the Disney Blog, Epcot guests will transform into secret agents to help Agent P thwart some of Dr. Doofenshmirtz’s most daring plots. Solving the clues will take agents to different places throughout these seven World Showcase pavilions -- China, France, German, Japan, Mexico, Norway and the United Kingdom.

The rooms, which sleep four and are priced at $189 a night, contain items from various Disney movies such as crowns woven in the bedspread design, fiber-optic effects on the headboard and a bathroom sink design which incorporates Genie’s magic lamp from Disney’s "Aladdin" as the faucet.

Cars Land opens June 15 at Disney California Adventure

Posted on 05:37 by john mical

To accommodate a media preview and make final preparations, the park will be closed June 14 and open the public on June 15, Disney announced.

Cars Land expands California Adventure by 12 acres. Guests will enter the town of Radiator Springs where there are three family attractions showcasing characters and settings from the movie, plus “Cars”-themed dining and shopping locations such as Flo’s V8 Café, Ramone’s House of Body Art and Radiator Springs Curios.

"Radiator Springs Racers is a twisting, turning, high-speed adventure through Ornament Valley and the town of Radiator Springs. Luigi’s Flying Tires invites guests to glide on air aboard special tires, whirling around with their pals. At Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, guests will whip around behind a baby tractor and enjoy tunes from a giant jukebox built from Mater’s most prized possessions," according to the release.

Starting June 15, guests will enter Disney California Adventure along Buena Vista Street, whice evokes the era when Walt Disney arrived in California with new dreams: 1920s Los Angeles. Buena Vista Street features Red Car Trolleys and the Carthay Circle Theatre, modeled after the site of the 1937 world premiere of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Carthay Circle Theatre will include a lounge and the Carthay Circle Restaurant, designed to be the premier dining location in Disney California Adventure.

This summer the new Mad T Party in Hollywood Land will feature nighttime, family fun inspired by the Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” The Pixar Play Parade will return and the new Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop at Pacific Wharf will open.

Robert Sherman, best known for writing "it's a small world" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," died Monday in London, his son posted on Facebook. He was 86.

His son Jeff wrote:

"My Dad, Robert B. Sherman, passed away tonight in London. He went peacefully after months of truly valiantly fending off death. He loved life and his dear heart finally slowed to a stop when he could fight no more.

"I will write more about this incredible man I love and admire so much when I am better rested and composed. He deserves that.

"In the meantime, please say a prayer for him. As he said, he wanted to bring happiness to the world and, unquestionably, he succeeded. His love and his prayers, his philosophy and his poetry will live on forever. Forever his songs and his genius will bring hope, joy and love to this small, small world.

"I love you, Dad.

"Safe travels."

In addition to writing "it's a small world" for the 1964 New York World's Fair ride, the Sherman brothers went on to write the songs for "Mary Poppins," "The Jungle Book," The Aristocats," "Adventures of Winnie the Pooh," "Bedknobs and Broomsticks," and "The Tigger Movie."

There are also other attractions in the Disney parks which contain their work. They include: Carousel of Progress ("There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow"), Journey Into Imagination ("One Little Spark"), and Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room ("The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room").

Robert Sherman was born Dec. 19, 1925 in New York City. His father Al Sherman was well known as a "Tin Pan Alley" songwriter. They eventually moved to Beverly Hills. Here's a complete obituary from the Associated Press.

Mariah Carey christened the latest Disney Cruise ship in a star-studded event Thursday night at a Manhattan Cruise Terminal, according to a news release.

Named godmother of the Disney Fantasy, Carey led the audience in a countdown that triggered a 6-foot bottle of champagne to erupt and shower onlookers with confetti and streamers as her husband, entertainer Nick Cannon, and Minnie Mouse broke a real bottle of champagne against the side of the ship.

An hour-long show with performances by Jerry Seinfeld, Neil Patrick Harris and Heather Headley preceded the christening.

"The Disney Fantasy is a spectacular addition to our fleet and builds on the creativity, innovation and artistry that are hallmarks of the Disney Cruise Line," Walt Disney Company President and CEO Bob Iger said in a statement.

The Disney Fantasy is the fourth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, joining Disney Magic (maiden voyage in 1998), Disney Wonder (maiden voyage in 1999) and Disney Dream (maiden voyage in 2011).

No plans yet to build Disneyland Dubai

Posted on 05:20 by john mical
Could Disneyland Dubai be next?

Not just yet, but you never know about the future, according to a report on Zawya, a Middle East and North Africa business website.

On a recent trip to Dubai to promote the 20th anniversary of Disneyland Paris, Julian Munoz, the director of marketing and sales at Disneyland Paris, talked with officials in the United Arab Emirates, but no plans evolved.

"We have been here for the past few days and held talks with officials. But there is no plan as yet; but who knows what happens in future," Munoz is quoted as saying.

Let's remember Dubai already is a place of excess. It's home to the world's tallest building and the world's biggest mall, to skyscrapers built in the shape of ship's sail and man-made islands shaped like palms. Could you imagine the size of the Disneyland castle that would be built?

Disney Facts: Disney's theme park technological firsts

Posted on 04:50 by john mical
From ride vehicles to fireworks displays to interactive virtual technology systems, Disney has been in the forefront of evolving technologies.

Random free-fall programming
at Twlight Zone Tower of Terror
is one of the patents.
Disney holds patents that deal with advancements in robotic figures, safety systems and even marine mammal communications (yes, they patented a device which allows a dolphin to activate a switch and associate it with a word).

Walt Disney Imagineering has been granted more than 100 patents since before the opening of Disneyland in 1955, according to the company.

Here is a timeline, according to Disney, of some of the theme parks' technological firsts:

1955: A 360-degree motion picture technology that employs multiple synchronized camerasis used for Circarama, U.S.A., in Disneyland. This is later updated for multiple attractions, including Le Visionarium at Disneyland Paris in 1992.

1959: The Matterhorn Bobsleds in Disneyland is the first roller coaster to use cylindrical rails and urethane wheels. Also at Disneyland, the first daily operating monorail system in the U.S. is christened.

1963: The creation of Audio-Animatronics figures, which allow humans, animals and creatures to be animated in three dimensions, is seen at Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room in Disneyland. (Here is a more compete history of Audio-Animatronic figures.)

1975: The first computer-controlled thrill ride, Space Mountain, opens at the Magic Kingdom.

1982: An advanced 3-D motion picture photography system debuts at Magic Journeys in Epcot. It is later enhanced and used in multiple attractions, including Mickey’s PhilharMagic in the Magic Kingdom.

1994: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror employs random free-fall programming at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

1995: Ride vehicles that move through three-dimensional environments with a capacity for random motion-simulator effects are used in the Indiana Jones Adventure in Disneyland.

A virtual hang-gliding experience at Soarin' is another
patent awarded to Disney.
2000: Trackless vehicles follow a random path by relying on unseen transmitters in the floor at Pooh’s Hunny Hunt in Tokyo Disneyland.

2001: A virtual hang-gliding experience provides a panoramic view of sweeping landscapes augmented by scents released during key scenes in Soarin’ Over California at Disney California Adventure.

2003: A ride system combining centrifuge technology with virtual imagery takes you on an adventure to Mars in Mission: SPACE at Epcot.

2004: A blend of digital projection and voice-activated, real-time animation allows for unscripted conversations between theme park guests and an animated character in Turtle Talk With Crush at Epcot.
